Routes

Some of our usual routes are shown below. Each image is linked to an interactive map of that route that shows it full size, with a calorie counter and elevation chart, and allows you to explore variations of the route. We use the first three routes most often because they are out-and-back courses that allow us all to start together, and people turn back at the point appropriate for their distance goal.

Canal Ritz

5 km (3.1 miles). We run south along the Rideau Canal, under the Queensway, and stop at the Canal Ritz restaurant. Generally, regardless of what distance people are running, we all take a break here and regroup before people decide whether to continue for a longer run, or turn back.

Bank

7.1 km (4.4 miles). Continue south from the Canal Ritz to the first bridge, which is Bank Street, then turn around.

Bronson

9.4 km (5.9 miles). Continue south past Bank Street to the next bridge, which is Bronson Avenue. Cross the canal on Bronson, then return on the other side of the canal. Re-cross the canal on the Pretoria Bridge, just before the Queensway.

Bridges

7.2 km (4.5 miles). This route takes us past Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Museum of Civilization. Run north along the canal to the Ottawa Locks, then turn left to run along the Ottawa River Pathway below Parliament Hill. Cross the river on the first bridge, the Alexandria Bridge, into Quebec. Turn right and run along the Voyagers Pathway, up by the Museum of Civilization, and get onto the Interprovincial Bridge. Cross back into Ontario, past Majors Hill Park, and rejoin the canal at the National Arts Centre.

Hartwell Locks

13.1 km (8.1 miles). Begin as for the Bronson route, but instead of crossing the canal, continue on the same side, around Dows Lake. Turn to follow the lake at the Dows Lake Pavillion, and run between the lake and the Arboretum to the Hartwell Locks. Cross at the locks and return on the other side of the lake, then along the canal. Re-cross the canal on the Pretoria Bridge, just before the Queensway.

Champlain

17.5 km (10.9 miles). This is a scenic route for a longer run. Run north along the canal to the Ottawa River Pathway, and continue upstream past the Alexandria Bridge and the War Museum to finally cross the river on the Champlain Bridge. Return on the Quebec side, finishing as for the Bridges Route.
