The Ottawa Senior Pride Network is made up of professional service providers, representatives of LGBT community organizations who work with seniors, and LGBT community members who are 50+ years of age.
We are committed to creating safe, LGBT-friendly services and residential environments for queer seniors, and a strong, connected, visible senior queer community in Ottawa. We approach the work from two angles:
1. Service Perspective: The community organization representatives and service providers have been meeting regularly since 2008. This group focuses their work on organizations serving seniors such as residential care facilities, service agencies, palliative care services, and homecare agencies. The goal is to encourage/advocate for LGBT-positive spaces and cultural competence within these agencies and facilities. We support these efforts by providing training and professional development for staff,
students and volunteers as requested.
2. Community Perspective: The LGBT Community Working Group meets regularly to look at ways to build a strong, proud LGBT seniors community in Ottawa. The group includes a number of LGBT seniors
who have a history of activism and community development. Our first project was the very successful
one-day conference ‘Taking LGBT Aging Out of the Closet’ held here in Ottawa in June of 2010. Several
sub-groups emerged from the conference. Throughout the fall of 2010, these sub-groups have been
meeting to discuss, research, and develop programs and projects within the Ottawa LGBT seniors’
community.
